Bugger!
wow way to go Fiona! I am on chapter 12 of my novel about 120,000 words to go... it will take me until christmas, then a rewrite til next April, then a polish... bugger! Wow! Now, I know why you are the professional. You can write that fast? Come on Fiona, what's the trick? Also why don't you use this palce as asounding board for ideas? Myrren's gift finished by August wow... when will the book be published? How long does that process take? regards Steve in awe... bowing .... "we're not worthy." #7 - 13th Jul 2002 15:38:00Forum ModeratorTotal Posts: 903 Last Online: 1st Jun 2004 21:40:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
I have to admit I am a fast writer. I thought when I wrote Betrayal from page one to finished ms it was a bit of a fluke at 14 weeks but Revenge and Destiny turned out to be around same which surprised me. So now 14-16 weeks will have to be my personal standard. Mind you, family, work that puts bread on the table and trips to America and the like tend to take their toll on the best of intentions.
What's my secret? I don't plan anything, I just write, which makes the whole process so much faster. I do no character studies and no plot layouts - the story comes together each day but that's my way. It won't work for everyone. I like to work on 150,000 words per book which is a comfortable size to write; pleasing to the publisher and a fat enough book on the shelves to satisfy readers. I also keep myself working towards 25 chapters but with no particular size in mind for those chapters. I used to have the luxury of letting the manuscript cure over a month or more, returning to tweak and edit savagely. Now, they have to rattle off my fingers and be emailed almost directly to publisher. Here's a tip - get ahead. Have a couple of books up your sleeve so you always have one at the publisher being edited, one curing and almost ready to go when needed and the last close to first draft finished. That would be bliss indeed! MemberTotal Posts: 24 Last Online: 17th Jul 2002 16:41:00 Registered: 15th May 2004 00:00:00
But you have some mental notes for other books and future tales do you not?
I guess you must have internalised and imprinted lots of information and now it's all coming out... is it in the unconscious do you think? I have completed chapter 11 today and I am so pleased, it's raw it's how I first thought of it... a few surprises in there (to me anyway I didn't expect them) and a good ending... I am so happy. Tomorrow I start on 12. I only write a chapter a day even when the muse takes me... I am not sure why I decided this method but I did... and it possibly works... or maybe I am just lazy! So what are the two book after Myrren's gift called? Can you fir in some of the names from the board... LEESA... SATINE etc? This is the new series I'm working on. Have to be a little elusive because it's still so new in my head and I'm just beginning to learn about my companions in this tale. It's a trilogy, set not that far from Tallinor actually and around about the same time. It is a totally different story with all new characters.
Book one is Myrren's Gift and I am about nine chapters in with approx 120,000 words to write still. Hoping, fingers crossed, to have this book finished by end August and off to publisher. #11 - 14th Jul 2002 15:48:00MemberTotal Posts: 104 Last Online: 10th Sep 2002 18:41:00 Registered: 15th May 2004 00:00:00
you're asking her to drop us all sorts of hints, incorporate names from the board, and use the members of the board for... advice...... please do not take this personally... but when i buy a fiona mcintosh book... i want to read her story... because everybody thinks uniquely... she writes differently and thinks differently than each of us.. as do we all... its fun getting the first chapter.. because its such a tease... but i wouldnt want to discuss the plot of the book or know about events that happen in the middle/end.. it takes the suprise and the mystery out of the book.. it wouldnt be unknown.. it would be familiar... and she writes fast enough so that we dont have to wait long to read it anyway keep doing what you're doing fiona! tom.
