Hi Fiona et al...

Congratulations on the imminent release of Odalisque and all the other signficant events in the publishing and writing. , Are you planning to run a competition to either giveaway ARCs or copies as prizes? , If yes then you might consider doing something like Robert Newcomb is planning in the next week or so to promote his release of book 4 of The Chronicles of Blood and Stone - Savage Messiah 27th Dec 2005. , As you know he is a master author and I love his work till it hurts. , I hope everyone discovers his works and enjoys it as much as I do.

He is running a comp for the ARCs at present and I dare say later for the released version. , This is brilliant in terms of promotion and also creative so that anyone can win - no judging as such - highest points wins... , clever right!!!

/ , , , , http://www.robertnewcomb.com/novels.html

robertnewcomb.com message reads ----- , , , We are going to be doing something different. The contest is going to center around internet promotion. Whichever person posts on other boards about SM coming out and they are quality posts on other author boards, contacting SF/Fantasy webzines, etc., then that person will get a valid point. The person with the most points will win the contest and hence win the ARC. This is one that everyone can be a part of, and yet still has a purpose to it.

So what do you think ? , Something that will work for everyone isn't it... , /

Oh goodie, I get to disagree with DN and right the cosmic balance (it's a long story )

I think it's a great idea for a new author for example because 'quality posts' were stipulated as criteria for earning a 'valid point'. So SPAM would not earn a single point.

Now of course I'm sure some twits out there will shoot first, ask questions later, needlessly spamming BBs around the world. So on that point DN is right, secondary SPAM could result despite best intentions. Mind you I'm noting it down as a possible marketing avenue for later and will be watching to see what happens around the traps

1. Author has new book. 2. Author suggests to readers that if they advertise his book on forums (BBs) they belong to in ways that are valid 3. Author awards points for valid 'advertising' 4. The person with the highest number of points wins a signed example of the author's work. :y

Sounded like a good idea at the time - and if it is SPAM then it is SPAM - so I shall not participate - anyway have just won an ARC on ebay to avoid any controversy and still win.  Wooo hooo haaaa

SPAM is like cholesterol...there's good SPAM, and there's bad SPAM. Besides, nobody should ever listen to me when deciding something. (I certainly don't listen to anyone else. Actually, that's not quite true, I will politely listen...then go-ahead and do what I was going to do anyway. But one should always be polite...even when ignoring someone.) Adios :pimp

Um, I would feel uncomfortable about asking any of my board members to do this. Don't get me wrong - I think it's clever marketing but I'm going to leave it to you lot to decide whether or not my work is of a quality that is worthy of promotion around other sites. Mind you, I might change my mind! I appreciate the idea Pauline and might work out how to run a competition anyway. We have no ARCs for Odalisque and I think that's mainly to do with it being brought forward to October instead of Christmas release and suddenly we had to go to print ... no time for advance readers. Anyway, thanks for the idea - very good of you. F

Hmm - was I influenced by Mr D'z  warning of SPAM.   Once I was alerted to the risk I did consider it but it did not influence my decision to buy the ARC instead of participating in the comp.  I decided to bid for the ARC because there was more likelihood of winning that than the comp.

Q - if there is a section on an authors website that says - other authors - is this not an invitation to promote and discuss other authors work?  Things like covers etc appear to supplement comments so I am a tad confused as to why running a deliberate campaign is any different - other than the risk of multiple entries on the site - which is SPAM right....  hmmmm...

Oh Gawd. SPAM per se isn't dangerous. SPAM...Sad Pointless Annoying Messages or if you prefer SPAM...Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail. I'm starting to feel guilty about even mentioning SPAM. Adios :pimp
