I missed the thread on horology and guess its an in-house joke.  My research suggests that the Chinese invented the first clock but that minor detail makes no difference to those who do not need mere techno or science to weave their tale of fantasy.  Time is relative and all that somethimes matters is whether it is day or night.  ... which season it is and how old a person is.

Hahaha.. even though the book was a bit short i thought it was great. And you ended it at the most perfect moment i think. I haven't been reading any really good fantasy books recently so when i finished Odalisque, i was happy for days. So thanx Fiona for the great read and look forward to the following books. As for Pez. I have no idea why i liked him so much. He reminds me of Cloot who was also my favourite charcater in the Trinity Series. Probably the whole bird thing. Plus he was a "Fool" which always reminds me of FitzChivalry Farseer *sighs.* Can't wait till the next books *waves*

I didn't realise we'd moved onto page 2 and I've just discovered all these lovely message - please forgive me and thanks for the upbeat stuff about Odalisque. It really is such a different sort of book to my first two stories that I had to make it feel like a different experience as much as throw readers into a brand new tale, new setting, etc. A book is a seductive thing and we give so much of our personal self into a tale of this nature that it's so very one on one between author and reader as much as witnessing what the characters do. I think a reader is alive in my books - I need them to feel like they're in the story too and feeling all the tensions, all the drama at a very personal level. Anyway, Odalisque moved slower and ended at the close of a chapter of Pez's life as much as anything else and book 2 will re-open with the new chapter of his life. Thanks all - it's fabulous to receive positive feedback and if it helps then you should know that I've delivered Emissary, book 2, to the publisher as of this week. F

Well, I'm not happy with Odalisque either. Wipe that tea up, Fiona. Actually, I have no real opinion on Odalisque - 'cos I haven't read it yet. Shocking, I know, but I do have a good reason. And that is that I am sick of picking up the first book of one of Fiona's series', flying through it, and then having to wait six months for the next book. So, this time, you're not going to get me. It's just not going to happen. The instant (or somewhere very close to it) that the series is concluded, I shall acquire the whole thing, and consume it in one sitting. Or maybe two. Please, Fiona, could you write faster?

Er....okay, so long as you're happy to wait until Christmas 2007? Oh I write fast alright, Sparhawk, it's just publication that takes ages, especially when the editorial team decides you've reached the stage where once a year is plenty. You'd think it would work in reverse wouldn't you.....she's going okay so let's bring them out as fast as she can write them but no, at Harpers it's a gracious, elegant affair where your books grow taller and move at a far more majesterial sort of pace onto the bookshelves. Forgive me.

That's alright, Fiona, I'll forgive you. Christmas 2007, eh? Hmmmm. Well, from what everyone seems to be saying, it'll be worth the wait! As for Harper's ........ not happy Jan.

Firstly, i know i've been absent from posting here for a bit, but uni and things, and not being able to get on the net very often... bah...

But anyways... i made the TERRIBLE TERRIBLE mistake of starting this book on a sunday night, when i had to awaken reasonably early on monday. I FORCED myself to put it down about half way through (the book, and the night), and had to finish it with 2 more late nights...

Just a little more, just a little more, i would say, then think to myself "oh, it must be about 12.30am now, time to sleep..."
NO!
My clock showed the unfortunate hour of 2am or so...

I was tired, but it was well worth it, although now i have no choice but to wait for #2...

Thankyou Fiona!

Fabulous! I feel a tad guilty about the bleary starts for you but I am joyous, BTG, that you found it hard to put down. Thanks for giving it a go and you'll be pleased to know that Emissary is now in its edit stage and already a much bigger book than Odalisque. Draft readers are giving it the thumbs up, so hope you enjoy it. x

I'm planning to go into suspended animation, and plan to be withdrawn once when the next Lynn Flewelling book comes out, and then resume my stasis until Emissary is released, or so i made up.

It's taken me a while to get round to checking these forums out, but now I'm here I'm sure I won't shut up!

I think your publishers need a good smack!  How can they make readers wait so long between books?  My darling husband bought Odalisque for me, knowing how much I loved the Quickening and Trinity, and now I don't know how I'm going to make it to the end of the year to see what happens next!

(although, with my second son due in August, I'm sure I'll have a few things to keep me busy ;))

I hope your husband has recuperated, FM, and you're healthy too, Zola ... Doesn’t anyone else feel some awfully harsh constructive criticism has been spouted unto poor FM? Don’t forget, comrades, we owe her.

EDIT: "spouted unto"? What was I thinking? Grr too many essays ... >_<

I like spouted unto. No problem, rant away, Zola, I do agree that the gaps between books are too long but please thank your husband for treating you. November not that far away. F

Draft readers?? You have them? I mean, it does make sense - it's like test audiences for films. But can you send me a draft copy of your next book? I'd be more than happy to devour and give critisisms. *innocent grin*

And 'spouted unto'? You should put that phrase in one of the books, Fi. A little inside joke for all us BBer's to understand and laugh at. Us, elite few.

Will see what I can do abut spouted unto.! When I was on tour with Monica McInerney we found ourselves listening to each other's speeches over and again. Even though we spiced them up with new anecdotes and tried to vary them in a number of ways, we both still knew each other's base talk word for word. So, to amuse ourselves we decided to set an odd word that we had to include in our speech in utterly seamless fashion. Well, it turned into this hilarious competition. The first word was carrot, next it was gargoyle and then it was bootscootin'. It was very funny not only trying to incorporate these words set fresh at the beginning of the day but even funnier waiting for the other one to deliver the word and make it sound thoroughly natural.

Welcome Katicans - welcome aboard - what was it a bout Pez that drew him to you???  He is my fav too...  Are you an Aussie or an international?

For me, I just kept imagining his head flipping back and candy coming out of his neck.

:P

He is easily my favorite in the book.
