First off... calm down :P Secondly, the names thing has been noted by McIntosh herself with Pez and a few other characters commenting that Ana's name is linked to Lyana. I personally think that it's misdirection. Because if you look at The Trinity Trilogy she had links with Alyssa's and Lys name. It doesn't necessarily mean they are one and the same person. If you go by what she's already done in previous works having Ana as the mother seems abit more plausible then Lyana herself. Also i don't think that Lazar and Ana are related. I don't think incestious love is the kind they feel. Galinsea is on that side of the border where Lazars blonde hair isn't that uncommon, it's totally plausible that Ana is an orphan that was abandoned by migrating people. Or that she was born specifically in that place so she would have an affinity for the desert/hills where the 'Rebel' is hiding. I also don't quite see how there won't be a scandal if Maliz takes over Boaz. He retains the memories of the person whose body he takes over. He'll know that he didn't consumate the marriage, if that is the case. If Lazar is zarab... why does he have such an infinity to Lyana's statues? Sorry to be so negative on your post. But you wanted your suspicions dispelled

I'm sorry if i'm scary.

He meant that if Maliz takes over Boaz, then "Boaz" will have "less reason" to make a scandal over Ana and Lazar when they run off to rule Galinsea as King and Queen and live happily ever after THE END~!!1 :)

You all make interesting points on what could be. I must admit the thought of Ana's child (if indeed there is one) being the Goddess never occurred to me, this does seem a very simple plot though and although it would be a nice neat little package I would prefer it not to be true. I really believe Lazar has an extremely important role to play in the end and when I finished reading Emissary a strange notion occurred to me, what if Lazar is the goddess! I know this may seem odd and unlikely but that’s why it occurs to me to be something that could happen. It was said in Emissary that Lyana had taken a male's form before and it didn't go well but maybe she worked out the problem with taking a male form and has been able to fix it. Lazar is the most prominent character in the story so far and he was the first one we were introduced to. I also wouldn't put his impressive fighting skills down as just practice or human ability, it is more likely to be a supernatural power, while links in with having to fight Zarab and Maliz. It just occurred to me that if Lazar was Lyana it would be ironic to say the least. Very anti-feministic as it would prove that a male is needed to complete a task that a female has been trying over and over again and failing. The ironic part would be that it would take a male to overthrow a male orientated religious system. In regards to Ket's prophecy when he calls Ana the mother, that could relate to how she has guided Lazar. It was after all her that connected him to the Ellyana when she asked him to pay for the gold chain. It was also her who compelled him to go into the desert, because I severely doubt him going into the desert if it had been any other Emissary for Percheron. Ket tells Ana she must live for the same reason to get Lazer into the desert. By helping the Goddess, Lazar, live she subsequently helps the creatures and giants live as Lazar is compelled to free them and by winning the battle they will live anyway. I agree with those saying that the rebel is the one who kidnapped Ana because I think the rebel’s soldiers are the human forms of the status and animals. Ana will find them and be able to free them because she has found the Rebel even if she didn’t intend to. I think the point Hornbydragonsfan made about Ana being Lazars child is kind of gross considering what they just did in the foothills but I wouldn’t put it aside as untrue straight away considering the link they are feeling could just be a Freudian bond in which the daughter is attracted to the father however this wouldn’t explain why Lazar is attracted so strongly in return. One this is for sure nothing is ever only coincidence so maybe Ana is Lazar’s child and looks so much like Lyana because she is the Goddess’ child. I think I will leave it at this point because above all I really need to read the two books again before I start making assumptions as all I’m going on now is my original feelings which from experience are never very valid. I just really needed to get them down before I could move on to other ideas about where everything is headed. I must say that I absolutely love Fiona’s stuff and envy her mind with all its intricacies. I think this might also be the perfect time to apologise for the long reply I just thought my first post should be more than one or two lines. I look forward to hearing all your thoughts on the topic.

Wow - Love all of this book discussion and the different threads and ideas generated. Is this what you guys and gals do ay book club? - very jealous that I don't live in Adelaide now :-(

Ok so here are my ideas for comment.

1) Ana is not the Goddess, that much is clear and has been reiterated by Maliz repeatedly touching her. I mean - how often does he have to 'test' her. Maybe he is just some kind of tactile perv. We all know that he wants to get his mitts into the Harem.

2) I think Ana's baby (from Lazar - not Boaz) is the Goddess, but obviously we can't wait until the baby is born and grown up to defeat Maliz - so the Goddess inside Ana will need to use Ana as a vehicle. Ana and the Goddess/Baby will probably have mind speech while the Goddess/Baby is still foetal and Ana will somehow be able to to draw on the power of the Goddess/Baby as she is the Mother. With the Goddess/baby inside Ana for nine months it will be a good time to train for the coming battle away from the icky touch of Maliz - even better if Ana is secreted away in some desert Fortress - allowing this to happen. Maliz will need to eventaully touch the Goddess/baby though for his powers to quicken - I think him being killed off while he is stuck in Tariq (mortal form) would be a bit disappointing - but by the time he gets to touch the Goddess/Baby, after it is eventually born - they will be MUCH more prepared to deal with him.

3) As theorized in point two, the baby is Lazar's. Boaz and Ana came to some arrangement that she would 'pretend' to be pregnant because this would endere her more to the Valide and also make her a better ranked Emissary to the Galinsean's.   He is too much in real love with her to have forced himself upon her and she certainly wasn't ready to do the dirty with him - so they organised something.  Wow Boaz - you are an OAK!

4) I am 60-40 in favour of Lazar being the Rebel, not Faranz. Very hard to pick this one - it could certainly go either way. I think that Faranz will be an ally to Ana either way - and a formidable one at that with his army of desert zealots - he seemed interested when she favoured the Goddess path over Zarab. Of course if his Fortress is kind of like a gathering of Lyana supporters - then this could be another reason for him to the the Rebel. The only reason O am favouring Lazar at this point is because of his communication with the statues - but maybe this is just an offshoot of him being caught up in the creation of the Goddess/Baby. Perhaps Lazar as the 'Father' will also be a vehicle for the Goddess/Baby's power.

The bit that is most intriguing to me at the moment is the shocking ( and as yet unrevealed ) duty asked of Pez by Ellyana which was quickly retracted following the trist between Lazar and Ana. It seems that Ellyana is not so 'All-knowing' as she appears to be. Obviously she is just another player - a seer of sorts that is trying to manipulate the Now to try and direct future possibilities. But what was/is Pez's duty? Did it have something to do with Jumo's death? Ahh so many questions. Love it.

just finished emissary this morning and thought i'd jump on the net 2 check out everyone's theories. OMG seriously i didnt even think up of half the stuff thats been mentioned on this thread!! the whole Ana's baby being the godess... i didnt even think of that one lol!!

i do hope that if she is pregnant that it is Lazar's, considering i still don't reckon her and Boaz did anything anyway. I agree with the desert guy (Faranz was it? i have such a bad memory!!) being the rebel. At first when Kett made his prediction i thought it was Lazar, but when Faranz was talking to Ana by himself, the tings he was saying just made me think he was the rebel.

and im guessing (dunno whether anyone said this yet) that Boaz's bandaged wrist was covering up a cut he made to get blood on the sheet after he married Ana to make it look like they 'had slept together' ??

lol yeah thats my opinion anyway

I'm fairly 50/50 on the consummated marriage, but it's going to be hard to hide a blonde baby (a baby girl if most of you have it your way) from Boaz dont' you think? I dont think it's going to take him 9 months to rescue her, so she doesn't have time to hide the baby.

It doesn't really matter though if you're speaking genetics!
It could have been that Ana's mother or father were blonde and so genetically it passes through her to the baby...perhaps due to this they wouldn't notice?
Although it's before genetics and the birth of modern science, lol, So they'd probably just accept it!

Loza, totally agree with you on that stuff! I had exactly the same thoughts! i think the baby being the goddess would be rather similar to the Trinity series wouldn't it? Tor and Alyssa's babies being the Trinity!

Well Blonde hair isn't 100% recessive, the colour of ana's parents is unknown, if she indeed ever had parents. It's plausible that somewhere along the line she has brown hair in here genetic history or Lazar. But the chances of a blonde hair baby being born of Boaz is very very slim if its that blonde blonde and not a browny blonde as hair colour isn't just dominant recessive. It may of been in a time before genetics and the reason of things where known. But in times before ours, people weren't stupid. They sussed out if there kid never looked a think like them and like someone else. They know there are family traits that run in familys. It doesn't really matter in the end this is all just speculation.

I love all the theroies that are going around in this thread and as I only finished Emissary last night I thought I would add some of my own! Did anyone consider the fact that Ellyana has told Pez that he can tell Maliz in Tariq's body? On their second encounter in the foothills in quite vague detail Ellyana told Pez something and gave him a knife which was describe later. This point had already been brought to the fore by Maliz's ponderings earlier in the book. Also on the baby topic, I agree though I think we may have to see whether anything happens to Ana in the third book especially now this Faranz has taken her off to his 'fortress' I am going to have to read both books again before I comment in anything else but they are my contribution for the moment!

HAIL the fantasy writer!

im fairly certain Boaz (or Ana) injured his arm so that they could stain the marital bed sheets with blood to convince the palace n Salmeo that the did sleep together. (assuming they didnt. which i strongly approve of :P)

that is a VERY good point about Lazar and Zarab, because doesn't Pez keep stating that 'this time it will be different' ?!?! so what if the 2 fueding gods are either; in love OR blood relations (father/daughter)?!? How much would that stuff up the celestial war? And we all know Ms McIntosh loves to put in a evil twist that makes the story all that more heartwrenching  ....but brilliant

Oh... wait... i was sposed to be helping you to stop those suspicions :P lol soz!

and i noticed the connection in Trinity between the goddess and the protagonists ^^

and i dunno about Lazar being related to Ana. thats kinda wrong and they ARE a very perfect couple! awww... i hope they arent!!

damnit! im thinking too much!
