For those of you who have seen my similar post on
The Lost Tribe, forgive my redundance. I just realized that Soldier and DN might have an answer to this.
This book is a classic. I think. At least, it's been around for a while, and TOR is reprinting it in December. I remember trying to read it when I was in high school, and I just couldn't get into it. However, I loved "Slan" by the same author, so I was just wondering, for those who read Null-A, if you'd recommend I'd give it another go, now that I'm all grown-up?

If you like sci-fi thrillers this is one to read. It is not for everyone. It is very philosophical. Sort of Rollerball meets Satre hehe.
I for one liked it, but can understand those that don't. It deals with the ultimate game show and the players of the game. The conspiracies are clever and the emotional nature of the book is lovely. The brain is made to think in this work. That is why I think Manon would enjoy it. But maybe not for everyone, especially if you like your sci-fi and fantasy easy to read and understand.
Be prepared for a mind game with words. This is clever stuff for it's time remember this is 1940's sci-fi. It was made for a mass market type of magazine.. also i think there are 4 or 5 books in the series.
maybe not in the same class as Asimov but still bloody god reads.. and you get to learn something about how to think!
Manon I think this is the kind of book you, DN and Brad will enjoy. Although I am surprised they are re-issuing it.

Thanks Soldier.

"> I'll watch out for when it hits the stores. TOR is bringing back oldies and classics this year, Van Vogt's being only one of them. I only hope they're going to reprint the whole series and not just the first one.

I've read a lot of Van Vogt in my time, and I still have a few lying around the place...damned imaginative writer.
There's no shortage of articles that claim he, Asimov and Heinlein were the most important authors in bringing about the Golden Age of SciFi.
My personal favourite has always been
The Voyage of the Space Beagle, and there's no doubt it influenced Gene Roddenberry strongly when he created Star Trek. (Interestingly though, the movie
Alien so resembled one of the
Beagle episodes that Van Vogt sued the filmmakers...who made an out of court settlement.)
Adios

I have not read space beagle.. But if it is as interesting as Darwin's book the voyage of the beagle then it is well worth reading.
Actually the first part of "Space Bagle" called BLACK DESTROYER is almost the same as Alien and that is why Van Vogt got a settlement.
DN you have the most wonderful taste in books. I take my hat off to you.
