Okay, okay....no murmuring please. I am a well documented Kay fan but having finally found my copy of Tigana in readiness for the Borders Book Club I took the opportunity as I waited outside the cinema for my sons today to begin. I read the first half dozen pages I suppose of the prologue before the gang arrived but still a shiver went through me. The magnificent writing aside, I felt that delicious sense of pleasure of embarking (once again) on this grand tale.

I just hope everyone else who has gone to the trouble of reading it will derive as much pleasure from it.

Damn it, this novel is good - even on the umpteenth read. And damn its author who breaks every rule in the writers' book with breathtaking brilliance.

I can honestly say I have yet to read a story I like better.
