I was rifling through children's bookshelves for a new book for one of my sons. He is devouring novels suddenly (this is a child who would read NOTHING 12 months ago so I can't help but be excited). Anyway, I mentioned on another thread that I bought Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card which looked like a mature read and yet was about a six year old boy. Sitting in the car with time to kill outside school and I picked it up. I am totally hooked. Jack is not allowed to read it until I finish it. It is such an addictive read about this kid who's forced to go to Battle School and has been singled out as the one who might save the world but the only way to see if their choice is right (they being the military) is to alienate him and constantly undermine his efforts and see what happens. I am really surprised that I can get so much out of this especially as it's not the traditional setting I feed off. Blimey - I'm going to have to buy second book now....is that Ender's Shadow or something? And a movie you say - wonderful!

The second book is Speaker of the Dead. I read Ender's Game a few months ago: it was on Sara's book club list. <img src="> There is a third book, Xenocide, and a fourth, Children of the Mind. Ender's Shadow is the story of Bean, Ender's friend. Then follows the Shadow of the Hedgemon and the latest, Shadow Puppets.

:eek What have you committed yourself to, Fiona?

I didn't read them all yet, because some other book, called Betrayal, fell into my lap. <img src=">

I agree, Fiona. That book, IMO has the best 1st page hook I can think of. I was totally engrossed after a single page, and it just kept moving from there.

I think you're right about the next one. I wasn't *quite* as impressed with the second, but it was quite good, too.

Brad.

SoldierB, it's all in the semantics.

When someone asks you, "Would you like to be committed?". What are you supposed to think?
Why can't they just ask, "Can I at least pencil you in for every second Wednesday?" There's no confusion that way.

It's much like.

I always thought commitment... was when I wanted to see you I will... and when not don't call me...

But, then I fell In love and found someone I want to spend every waking moment with... and even some of the unawake moments hehe.

So, Now I am fully committed to the love game... It is wonderful!

I bought a copy of 'Ender's Game' today. I decided it was worth a re-read...but mine seems to have disappeared from my shelves. ('Ender's Game' is one of those books that tend to do that.)

Actually, when my son finishes book two of Harry Potter the plan was for us to read book three together...but I think I might try to talk him into 'Ender's Game' instead. I'm pretty sure he'll get a big buzz out of it...and frankly, they're waaaay better books than Potter.

I'll try it as well, Fiona, although I would like to try Guy Gavriel Kay.

Do Kay first. I think he will have a very strong appeal for you, especially as you enjoy poetry. This writer might as well be one for his sumptuous prose probably best displayed in Sarantine Mosaic where he is at his most confident. Best story, however, in my opinion is Tigana and for high fantasy you can't go past Fionavar Tapestry.

I did go to a GGK website, an unofficial one I think. There was brief summaries of his works and yes, Tigana looks the most interesting. I'll keep prowling the bookstores for them.

Why am I reading this? Because it was written by Fiona.
