Do you do anything else?
Dear God. I have only read like : Fiona McIntosh Sara Douglass Robin Hobb Elizabeth Moon from that list you gave. Of course there are a number of Male writers I have read as well. Maybe I should quit my job? Doh! How the hell am I going to pay for all those books if I do. Catch 22? .............................. OMG!!
Lisa you missed Robert Jordan! ok, I realise alot of ppl hate his work...but not me. As for George Martin, the books are really worth the read. I'm notoriously fussy when it comes to fantasy and have read about 1/3rd of the woman and 1/4 of the men authors. If it doesn't grab me at the end of the first book it gets donated to the local library MemberTotal Posts: 70 Last Online: 26th Nov 2002 21:51:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
male fantasy guys i have read (and am still reading)
1. Piers Anthony (though the Xanth novels are getting boring now and over Punned) 2. Robert Asprin ("Myth-ing Persons" as a title just says it all) 3. James P. Blaycock 4. Terry Brookes (*argh* i want mass paperback Antrax) 5. Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl had me in stitches and nearly wetting myself on the train towards the end of the book) 6. Hugh Cook (i made myself read these ones, didnt like them much though) 7. Gordon R. Dickson (the dragon knight series is a killer!) 8. David (& Leigh) Eddings (like Lisa, i think ive outgrown the belgariad and the others, but i liked althalus myself, though i wish he had made it at least two books, it takes up too much room in my bag) 9. Greg Egan 10. Raymond E. Fiest (just started all the ones dad has, good so far) 11. David Gemmell (kinda grew on me, like mould) 12. Lyndon Hardy (kept putting off reading them, but picked one up and couldnt put it down till id finished the trilogy) 13. Robert Holdstock 14. Ian Irvine (kinda like them, waffle a bit though) 15. Mike Jefferies 16. Robert Jordan (when he gets to the main action i like the books! he describes things a bit much!) 17. C.S. Lewis (one of the first fantasy i read when i was 5) 18. R.A. MacAvoy (the book of kells was interesting) 19. Julian May (hang on aint she a girl??) 20. Dave Morris (i went through a RPG stage there once) 21. Terry Pratchett (i lurve the discworld books!) 22. R.A. Salvatore (okay, when inm in the mood) 23. Tolkien (took me AGES to read them, which is unusual for moi) 24. Gene Wolfe 25. oh and all the star wars, star trek books with Kevin J. Anderson MemberTotal Posts: 223 Last Online: 19th Apr 2004 16:34:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
I heard of most of those girls. Have read... maybe half of them, and of those half, only about half of them have really stuck with me. I don't think Janny Wurts is aussie... I might be wrong though.
Hmm, male authors on my shelf. 1. David Eddings (I think I have out grown him now, even though he was my first... hehe. Couldn't read Althalus, was too... eh) 2. Raymond Feist (classic epics like no other...) 3. David Gemmell (there is no beating Jon Shannow, but his books are starting to get a little... stale) 4. Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park is brilliant... and his other books are good too) 5. Terry Brooks (classic Shannara... the new Running with the Demon books are great) 6. Kenneth Flint (ever heard of him? used to write celtic mythology, but I think he's disappeared now) 7. Tad Williams (Memory Sorrow and Thorn, great books, haven't read any others, I think Fiona has though...) 8. Sean Russell (my new hero. Loved the One Kingdom. brilliant imagry) 9. Steven King (eh, read one, read 'em all...) 10. Dale Elvy (awaiting the second Spirit Shinto book, due out soon) 11. Douglas Adams (enough said) 12. Timothy Zahn (sci-fi but good anyway, hehe. life would be better if I could find a copy of the second conquerers book...) 13. Edgar Allen Poe (enough said) 14. George RR Martin (liked Game of Thrones, but haven't read on, people apparently can't get enough of him) 15. Tolkein (hmm, maybe if I read these again, I would actually fall asleep at night...) There are others, can't see them or think of them at the moment though. Couple of girlies I'd like to add... 1. Laurel Hamilton. (Anita Blake kicks good butt) 2. Lynn Flewelling (Bone Dolls Twin very good) and just because she wrote two good books 3. Anne Rice .............................. Tvahlya,
Do you do anything other than read? Of these guys you list ive read C.S. Lewis Narnia series, a bit of David Eddings, and a bit of Robert Jordan. I bought a book by Andrew Whitmore (Fireflaught). It looked promising but it flopped. He has such lovely discriptions, but its mostly about discriptions and not much action. I don't know, work gets hectic for a couple of weeks (year-end tax planning time does that to us accountants) which means I don't have time to visit the board and everybody goes post crazy! And Fiona isn't even here.
Since everybody else is doing it I just thought I'd list the Fantasy authors on my book shelves, both male and female: Lloyd Alexander Poul and Karen Anderson Mark Anthony Piers Anthony Elizabeth Boyer Marion Bradley Chas Brenchley Kristen Britain Terry Brooks C J Cherryh Susan Dexter Stephen Donaldson Carol Nelson Douglas Sara Douglass David and Leigh Eddings Kate Elliott Steven Erikson Jennifer Fallon David Farland Raymond Feist Lynn Flewelling Kenneth C Flint Alan Dean Foster Maggie Furey David Gemmell Mary Gentle Terry Goodkind Tracey Harding Lyndon Hardy Elizabeth Haydon Marcus Herniman Robin Hobb William Horwood Ian Irvine Kate Jacoby Mike Jeffries Oliver Johnson JV Jones Robert Jordan Guy Gavriel Kay Katherine Kerr CS Lewis Morgan LLywelyn John Marco George RR Martin Julian May D McAvoy Fiona McIntosh Dennis McKiernan Martin Middleton LE Modesitt Jr Michael Moorcock Douglas Niles Melanie Rawn Jennifer Roberson JK Rowling Sean Russell Elizabeth Scarborough Tony Shillitoe Robert Silverberg Sherri S Tepper JRR Tolkien Jack Vance Weiss and Hickman Jane Welch Tad Williams Gene Wolfe Patricia C Wrede Janny Wurts MemberTotal Posts: 223 Last Online: 19th Apr 2004 16:34:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
Oh oh oh!!!! You have Kenneth C Flint too!!! You must be about the only other person in the world who's got his books (well, in my world anyway, and it's rather small these days). And Sean Russell... I have only the One Kingdom. Do you have others?? What are they like??
And do you seriously alphabetise your books?? I tried that once... but now it's just my CDs, DVDs and videos that are alphabetised. .............................. MemberTotal Posts: 307 Last Online: 11th Oct 2004 10:02:05 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
Lisa
No I don't alphabetise all my books - just by author, and within author by publication date. I know its very sad but what's the point of having lots of books on bookshelves if you have to search everywhere to find a given book. Plus I tend to be a bit of a library for friends so keeping them all in order helps me to keep track of what's been borrowed. I'm somewhat scared that you have books by Kenneth Flint. I thought I was the only person alive who had heard of him let alone owned some of his books (admittedly only 3 in my case). In relation to Sean Russell, like you I have only read The One Kingdom. But that was so enjoyable that I will be going out to buy another one as soon as I finish the last of Chaz Brenchley's Outremer series - which I am going to force myself to read now that I have finished Wizardborn by David Farland. Big Hills, re Flint.
I have... Otherworld, Cromm, The Hound of Cullan, Champions of the Sidhe, Master of the Sidhe, Challenge of the Clans and Storm Shield. Am missing the Riders of the Sidhe and Dark Druid. I've read them both but they're out of print so I can't get copies. I will definitely be out getting the next Sean Russell book. The story was a bit... hard to get at first, but the imagery was just fantastic... and of course I am now hooked on the story. Fiona, you love us anyway... .............................. #18 - 13th Jul 2002 16:51:00Forum ModeratorTotal Posts: 903 Last Online: 1st Jun 2004 21:40:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00 MemberTotal Posts: 225 Last Online: 1st Sep 2008 22:41:45 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
Some that haven't been mentioned that I didn't mind
Katherine Kurtz - the Deryni books E Gary Gygax - the Gord the rogue series Michael Moorcock - endless champion series (and it really seemed to be at times with all the different series tying in together) Philip José Farmer - Riverworld series just to name a few extra......... When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge.
