okay almost finished reading - pity my lunch hour isnt an hour longer darn it
Anyway this book is fantastic in fact i have just ordered the next one in hardcopy from America. The book took turns I would never have expected but seem logical. there is nothing worse than plot twists just for the sake of it. There is so much political machinations and plots within plots happening. it did take sometime to get idea of who everyone was as there seems to be a cast of thousands but now wow.
The problem is i think I will need to go back an re-read it to pick up the bits I mised the first time round and pick up on the clues of what happenes later in the book.
The think I like most about it is that it is quiter unlike anyother fanatsy novel I have ever read.
Its very rare that I would rave this much about a book I think the only other time was Betrayal
well thats it for today

So I gave in to peer presure and bought this today. Read the first chapter over chips and gravy (I felt quite ill afterward). So far... no opinion yet, but am looking forward to getting into it properly.

I felt like that Lisa to begin with. She uses such a high style of writing that I wondered whether it would become tedious but it has begun to flow beautifully and Phedre becomes addictive and Delaunay is fascinating.

Ok ok ....Jots Kushiels dart down for reading after he finishes:
Ship of Destiny
Crippled Angel
and Destiny.
Or if I manage to squeeze it in between those.

Read the second chapter over a suasage roll today (it was an old sausage roll, all the pastry so flaky that it looked like I'd rolled in the stuff and the filling was all dry and crusty... I must find better food for reading). Interesting religion they got going there...

Finished it! Phew, probably 200 pages too long - found myself skimming and skimming which is not a good sign but I found a lot of the political stuff a bit tedious. Keeping track of all those houses, all those names, all those cultures tested me when really I was totally engrossed in Phedre and Joscelin. The latter is a superbly crafted hero despite his reluctance. Good villains too. Melisande is intriguing. In fact the whole premise for the tale is intriguing and for a debut book, wow! She's a genuine talent. Not sure I feel like going straight onto Kushiel's Chosen, part two. Instead, dare I say I'm going back to tried and trusted, probably heading towards Tigana (yet again) or perhaps Lyonesse.

Hehe, once I stopped eating while reading, I managed to get through it.
I know what you mean, Fiona. It did start to get a bit tedious toward the end. I really found it hard to get into it at the start as well, and my amature psychology tells me that it was because I couldn't relate to Phedre all that well. In the begining she was WAAAAAAY TOOOOO submissive for me. I couldn't handle the way she just let Delauney use her like that. When he... um... you know, and she... went you know where, then I started to relate to her. She was actually taking action, not just reacting. Had a bit of trouble with the blokes names as well... Hyacinth and Joscelin... aren't they girls names??
It took me about two weeks to read this, and then I bought
The One Kingdom by Sean Russell and... WOW!!!!! I read it in 48 hours. I highly recommend this book. It is fantastic. There are no questions answered, the reader is left completely unsatisfied and hanging from a cliff (so to speak), but it is absolutely marvellous.
About to start A Sorcerer's Treason now, and have Changer of Days on order from the book shop. That should keep me going until August 1.

I read this book not long ago and thought it was a great read and intend to read Kushiels Chosen as soon as I find it.
The political intrigue and constant change of scenery kept it moving, and Phedres...talents certainly made for an interesting insight into another mindset. The religion and rede are an unusual mix, in my experience at least

Overall it's a world that I could get lost in, and that has earned it a place in my bookshelf.

I read this book last year. It fascinated me... I can say that I became addicted to it as Phedre is addicted to pain!

I'm finishing Ring of Five Dragons, and getting to Kushiel's Chosen next! That's the second in a trilogy that should conclude with Kushiel's Avatar.

Manon
I managed to get a copy of her second book imported for me as its not out here yet and i thought it was just as good if not better than the first one.
For some reason I really enjoyed these books I guess its cause they are a bit diffferent from the standard fiction around.
I guess thats cause the first one had to set up all the politics etc. I cant wait to read the third on Kushiels Avatar

Ambrai (and
when is Melanie Rawn going to write this third book??? With a name like yours, you ought to know!)
Kushiel's Dart was supposed to be a stand-alone book. When I read it, I liked the way all of the plot lines got resolved, except one tiny little thing... But I could live with that. I was really surprised to learn that this book was in fact the first in a trilogy. When Carey wrote it, her agent said that she had to write three books. That's the way it is in fantasy. So, I was afraid that her next book wouldn't be as good as the first. I'm starting it next week. I'll let you know what I think.
