I've just started reading Anne McCaffreys' "Crystal Singers of Ballybran" series. Not my usual type of book, but not bad so far. Anyone else read/liked/hated this?

Yes, I have read alot of her books over the years... and to tell the truth I don't like her novels.
On saying that... I do have poor judement...
I'm the guy who said that Dungeons and Dragons would be a failure and that Harry Potter was useless.
Am I the person in the world who dislikes Harry Potter?

Soldier, you don't like HP?? Sacrilege!!
Then again I'm not really fond of Tolkien or, and I realise I may get carnaged for this one, Robin Hobb.

No I think HP is childish.. childlike and mainly seen it all before, nothing new... I went through the wardrobe, no need to go under the stairs.
As for Robin Hobb... you do not want to know my honest opinion do you? I refuse to give it so there..
Well here is me going out on limb or two... Don't like Robert Jordan or Stephen Donaldson either...
They are bot good writers but they don't turn me on...

Hmmm, well I wasn't a fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon". That one turned me off Arthur stories and her books altogether.
Now, Anne McCaffery's books. I didn't like the Pern books at first but as I read more of them, I think you'll warm to the characters after a while. (Read Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern - it's fantastic) I started Anne's books via "The Ship who..." which I thought were just incredible. After those ones, it was a shock going from them to the Pern ones and I thought they weren't as high in quality.
The Crystal Singer series is good though! I liked two of them (can't remember which two) and disliked one immensely - dunno why. I think Anne McCaffery is one of those authors that you have to read of their books to like. Just my two cents worth.

i like most of anne mccaffrey books, the ones i amsolutely hate are her "romance" ones, i found one by accident once and picked up cos it had her name on it, and after about reading the first 3 chapters i refrained from throwing at the wall cos it was a library book, im glad she has mostly stuck to fantasy and sci-fi she does them waaaay better!
steve, i'll second you, i dont like robert jordan or stephen donaldson either, both for totally different reasons, robert jordan (to me) waffles on a bit and he describes things overly a bit

Anne McCaffreys one of those authors I always hear about, but never got around to buying. It's not bad reading, considering I predominantly go for medieval-based fantasy, not sci-fi. I like her use of language although sometimes I think I may become sesquipedalophobic (I've always wanted to use that word

"> , and yes I know I'm a dork

) with some of the less common words she slips in.
I reckon I read a short story based in Pern(?) in 'Legends' which featured short stories by heaps of popular authors, including Jordan, GRRM and Prachett. Anyone else read this?
