Mists of Avelon was the first book published but I think Forrest of Avalon is a prequel to it. I also vaguly think there is another one around in the series as well.

I really enjoyed reading mists of Avalon. I did find it a tad hard to get into but once you have wow. Its a completly different take on the King Arther Story from the perspective of the women in the story. With much more of a concentration on the mystical aspects.

from memory the book is rather long. The copy I have is about 1000 pages and it is hard reading in that it is densly packed.

If you like this one though I highly recomend The Firebrand which tells the story of Troy again through the women involved.

Well, for one, I did not like the Mists of Avalon at all. Everyone seems to love it - I think it is the most awful book I've ever read.
And I think I should leave it at that. *grins*
