just picked this one up tonight.... just read "The Frog King".. or as I know it... the frog prince...

things are a little different than the .... 'americanized version'....??

seems the princess threw the frog against the wall and it turned into the prince.... and he still loved and married her.... i would have been a little annoyed about having been chucked across the room against a stone wall, with the intent to do some serious harm....

Hmmm, threw him against the wall and he turned into a prince/king... that must be where I went wrong all those years ago. We used to whack them with cricket bats and golf clubs...

Isn't it funny how 'fairy tales' get altered over time though? Like the Little Mermaid isn't supposed to get her prince. She's supposed to kill him instead. Or at least, that's what I heard. And don't Hansel and Gretel actually get eaten in the original tale?

Cinderella was supposed to get her foot cut off/back to fit the shoe. The Little Mermaid was supposed to kill the prince, but she didn't and she died.

We did a whole big topic on appropriation in 3 unit English last year, and it was fascinating seeing how fairy tales change over time.

The Little Mermaid is Hans Christian Anderson, isn't it??

I remember seeing an episode of the Disney spin off cartoon, where Ariel is still half fishy and she has a series of runs in with this human fella, all comical and rather childish, but fun all the same, and in the end he turns out to be Hans Christian Anderson and he goes off to write this story about a little mermaid... cute huh??

Nothing quite like Disney to spoil a good, rousing, blood letting fairy tale...

the two children did not get eaten by the witch.... she got pushed into the fire....

what was the reason that they got left in the woods though??

because in the original story, the step mother doesnt want to feed them, so she makes her husband help her abandon them in the forrest.....

Indeed! And I get accused by some sensitive readers that my stories are too brutal, yet I bet they all read the Brothers Grimm and HCA.

just read cinderella last night... what a brutal story... cinderella doesnt get her heal cut off... one of her stepsisters cuts off her heal to get it to fit in the shoe so the prince will marry her... but the birds tell him that she is not the right girl... then the second sister cuts off her big toe so her foot will fit, and again the birds tell the prince she is the wrong girl... then he finds cinderella and her foot fits perfectly.... and then at the end, the birds peck the step sisters eyes out!!!!!

Isnt that terrible?!
and these were supposed to be childrens stories...
