I just finished this book (finally!)

It is so cool. The lead character is Nicholas Valiarde, a master thief and a superbly complex character. He was taken in as a child by a wizard, who was later sentanced to death for necromancy (illegal magic that requires murder) despite his innocence. Viliarde devotes his life to righting this wrong and to fund it goes back to being the thief he was as a child. He is the best at what he does.
The story opens as Valiarde and his team are breaking into an old home through the elaborate dungeons beneath. They come across evil magic that Viliarde suspects is related to necromancy and his investigations pull him deep into the thick of it.
His team consists of various loyal friends, including a young wizard and dear friend past his prime, and Viliarde's actress girlfriend. She's such a great female character, helping dig up information with her elaborate costumes and rolls, and a few interesting surprises.

What I love about this book is how the story is not so much told as unravelled before us, as well as Viliarde's amazing past. Right up to the end surprises are revealed, and the old seedy city that Viliarde knows like the back of his hand just adds to the drama.

I hope its available in Australia. Its so incredibly good.

I also read this book some years back, and thought it was fantastic!!

I have also managed to find several of her other books and have enjoyed them equally.

ummm...
I think it was called 'City of Bone' or something. It was good (although not as good as DoaN) and had some interesting elements of sci-fi interwoven into the story.

But then as I remember 'Death of a Necromancer' had some good Gaslight/steampunk things going on in it as well.

Oh, and I just remembered, I read another one that I found recently which was a lot more fantasy although with some good dimension shifting ideas. I thought it not as good as either of the other two.

Sorry about being so vauge, but as you can possibly tell, I get most of my books from the library rather then the bookshop, so don't have them to refer to again later.

Hope this is of some use.

Dale
