Nothing much happening in this forum so thought I'd ask the question - what's the fastest you've read a normal sized novel. I know it's not going to be LOTR! The reason I ask is that S...a teenager from Melbourne wrote to me today telling me how much she had enjoyed Betrayal and I was amazed to learn she had read it in three hours!

I don't read fast. I like to soak in every word. Sometimes when I am engrossed in a really good book and am getting to a particularly great part of the plot I will put the book down to add to the suspense. I love suspense, and I despise finishing a good book!

I read Betrayal throughout 3 or 4 days. That was fast for me.

3 hours is fast.

Do you think there is a brag factor that goes around. Everyone seems to like to brag at how fast they can read.

Depending on the book or time I have, my reading speed varies. I suppose the fastest I have ever read a book is a couple of days.

I used to be a fast reader. Could devour a book, no matter how good or bad I thought it within a couple of days. Now... well... it takes a bit longer, too engrossed in my own writing I guess. Either that or I'm getting old and slowing down.

However, something from a favourite author would still be read within a couple of days.

What are you reading, Ambrai?

Stop reading Lisa...get on with your writing please!

I read fast but also deliberately try and slow myself to savour the writing of favourite authors and because I cannot cope when it ends...I feel lost for a day or so.

A few months ago I read the the first three books of Covenant Chronicles in two days....but I wasn't doing much else than snuggled into an armchair in a holiday cottage with no pressure to do anything more than make another pot of tea and climb back into the chair. Wonderful!

Oh Fiona, I am guessing it will take longer to read the second Covenant Chronicles. They hit a nasty flat spot in the middle somewhere.

Depending on the book and how engrousing it is and how long it usually takes me one or two days to read but then I am a fast readers.

Of course there are those books like LOTR that are just so dense and well written that it takes longer.

The problem is that if i really like a book I find it very hard to stop reading. i was late for this morning for that reasaon. i got to the point were i was 50 pages from the end and just had to finish the book. Also a reason for very late nights, once I get to a certain point in a book I just have to finish it.

I never could get into the Covenant books. Read the first one like ages ago, really ages ago, and didn't like it all that much. Tried to read the Mirror of her Dreams (?) as well, but couldn't get past the first chapter. The only Donaldson I have ever liked a lot is his short stories. Specifically a couple of them... *digs out book she stole off her sister years ago*.... 'Animal Lover' and 'Unworthy of the Angel'. They're rather brilliant short stories and I don't usually like short stories.

Not really reading anything at the moment. And having a bit of trouble writing as well... kinda at that point where I know what I want to happen, but just can't get myself over that first hurdle of plunging in.... and the heat isn't helping either. All I want to do is sleep, but then it's too hot to sleep during the day as well. :

Fiona, I am currently re-reading the black jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop.

her books are fantastic but they are definitely darker than a lot of other books. She has tone a great twist on the idea of witches and good doesn't necessarily triumph over evil.

As one of the blurbs on the back put it " Anne Bishops decadent jeweled world is vividly painted, dramatic, erotic, sadistic, hope filled" Lynn Flewelling

Well, I read 'Goddess'  way too fast. But I do power through your books, Fi. I finished 'Goddess the afternoon I got it, and I bought it at about 11am. I even stopped and did homework in between reads but I just couldn't not read it, not with it sitting next to me and mocking me. I think in the end I probably read it in maybe 6 hours? But my first read's always a really really fast read to get the basic plot down, then I go back and do a second read. I think I read 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' in about ten hours as well.

But I try to stretch them out. Make them last. But it's hard because I do get sucked in, start reading at ten at night, snuggled in bed and before I realise I'm at page 310 and it's 1.30 in the morning. Oh, I once read a whole Jeffrey Archer novel in about four hours. I only realised how close I was to the end because I had this vague feeling that my fingers were cold and when I came back into the real world, I realised how cold it is outside of my doona cover. Then I was only two chapters from the end, so there didn't seem to be much point in stopping...

depending how much I wanted the book...and free time....and willingness to stay up through night....  Fiona you'll be happy to know that you are one of those stay up through night sort of authors.

i usually read at nighttime, because my day's are filled with work.  average novel takes me about 5 hours... that's including being naughty and reading the last chapter/towards end of book and flicking though bits.  It's easier with trade paperbacks because the print is larger and easier to read.  Last book i read was twisted citdadel by Sara douglass... 573pages trade paperback and that was done in 5 hours give or take....  I did contemplate putting it down.... but i wanted to knwo what happened to a certain character....i'm terrible like that.  i got to involved in the books.

I'm sorry if i'm scary.

I go through about 7 - 10 books a week. Depending on size ect. I only read at night really. I really miss catching public transport to work, thats the best time of day to read unless  you are like me and laugh out loud at all the great bits and people look at you really oddly.

can I just say great taste Ambrai, I love Anne Bishope and the Black Jewels series is to die for, I just adore the boys they are two of the best characters around.

cheers
Issy

Hi everyone,

great topic, I"m so glad to hear that there are others like me and read fast.

I think my record attempt at finishing a novel wasHP last year, I bought it around 3pm, read first few chapters over coffee at a cafe, then wenthome and read it that night, I think I wasup until 3am, though I did have some breaks. If memory is correct I worked it out to have taken about 9 hours or so.

I've been re-reading my bookshelf as I"m on leave, and have been up until 2 am most nights, but i've been reading fairly easy fiction, and some teenage novels as well. I can ususally finish an average adult book in 5-6 hours, and most of the time surprise myself that I"m still up and it's VERY late, I've worked it out that I really should only do this when I'm on leave.
