I read somewhere that the trilogy was originally titled, "The Golden Compasses" due to a line in Paradise Lost by Milton. Also ispiration for the title of the trilogy, "His Dark Materials". Yet publishers argued that there was only one compass in the story. So Pullman changed the title to "Northern Lights" and retitled the series as "His Dark Materials", scrapping "The Golden Compass(es)" altogether. American publishers were attached to the "Golden Compass" and therefore that version remained whilst the UK, Australia and most other countries got "Northern Lights". To avoid confusion they apparentally kept the Golden Compass as the title of the movie. That even confuses me.

The books have been my all time favourite since I began reading them about seven years ago when I was ten. I've loved them ever since, and I'll see the movie when it comes out. I'm absolutely itching for it. Even if it isn't good, which knowing me, I'll love it, I still want to see my favourite characters on the big screen. Especially Iorek, my favourite. Gotta love those polar bears...:)

I saw it yesterday and even though it took a life of its own rather than sticking completely to the book, I loved it. I don't know why anyone wouldn't. Yeah, they switched Svalbard before Bolvanger, and it didn't end like in the book, I still came out happy to have seen it because I have been  in love with the book for so long. The only complaints really are how they changed certain scenes, such as the beginning with the whole poisoning bit, and perhaps the scene in which Lyra learns who her parents are. In the book she discovers it from the Gyptians, and you learn about Coulter and Asriel's past, in the movie you didn't. Same with the concept of Dust, although it wasn't major in the first book, it had no real explanation in the movie. My friend came out asking all these questions because she hadn't read the book beforehand. Though even she said she loved it and would see a sequel, that is, if they hopefully make one.

My sons read the books when they were about 11 and they are now 16. They absolutely hated the movie. They felt it had been made too child-friendly and too much of what made Northern Lights so exciting, frightening, and indeed dark, was lost. If not for the fantastic armoured polar bear, they would give it a very low score indeed. They said the actress playing Lyra is incredibly irritating but that Kidman really makes her character come alive, that Daniel Craig was good too. They still liked the bear best of all but then he was our jaw dropping favourite from the book anyway so he couldn't fail in their eyes.Pity. I wanted them to come back fizzing with enthusiasm so that I could go see it with starry anticipation. So now I might save all that emotion for Atonement, next on my hit list.

Yes Atonement is next on my list too. Can't wait to see it. After reading the book by Ian McEwan, I fell in love with it. So it better be good. :)

In regards to The Golden Compass, I loved the actress who played Lyra, she had the perfect rough British thing going on that suited the character perfectly. I too, also found that most of Pullman's athiestic messages were softened, and the ending was changed, yet for the better probably, as to draw more attention for a sequel. I loved Iorek, he has been my favourite character since I was ten. It was great to see him on the big screen...yeah yeah, im a nerd haha

Thanks for the feedback. I can't believe I've not been to a  movie since NYE 06.. might have to make it a tradition and go tomorrow. Your reviews and comments will help me decide. I still can't believe I missed seeing the last HP movie at the cinemas..

Cheers,

K

It seems ages ago that I saw this movie.

I personally enjoyed it as a movie, I thought the Character of Lyra was actually done remarkably well.  The voice for Pan (that kid from Finding Neverland and Charlie and the chocolate factory) was brilliant., the CG for pan was great too, the eyes didn't look soulless which they often do in CG.

Plotwise i think it's understandable why they stopped when they did, i don't think you can leave it on such a remarkable event as the first book ends for a childrens movie and not raise a few eyebrows.  It is a good place in the book to end and pick up later.  I thought Nicole Kidman's portrayal as Mrs Coulter was brilliant, it's so nice to see her really come alive in a role after such boring movies as Bewitched etc...
Can you really say that the actress was annoying in the scene where Lyra is about to be parted from Pan before Mrs Coulter walks in?

I thought it had enough emotion, like when she finds billy.  A few scenes where a little 'yawn' worthy, like her chase scene with Goblers and her walking over that ice bridge.  But i think it made up with it with Iorek, the witches and all that.

Did anyone else think that the dusting of Daemon's in the film was brilliant, how there partners would die then they are a swirl of golden dust.

I'm sorry if i'm scary.
