You're supposed to pick one character in total Steve, not a separate one every post.

My choice is Thomas Covenant - a totally reluctant hero, who does despicable things and for the most part does his heroic acts by mistake.

Who is your absolute favourite character from a fantasy novel - only one - and why? (It will help all the writers here understand what makes the really well crafted characters tick for readers.)

My favourite character is usually whoever I'm reading about at the time. All time fav, hmmm, I liked Bilbo a lot - just the way he farted around so much everytime he needed to do something.

Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman invented a character called Simkin in their Darksword Trilogy. He was one of the funniest characters I've encountered in fantasy. You waited for his appearance whenever he wasn't in the action - just because you knew a riot would shortly ensue.

But all time fav, hhhmmm I'll have to think about it. I bet Robin Hobb gets mentioned a few times in this thread though. That Fitz Farseer character seems to get everyone going. I've never read one of her books - she's on my next time I buy a book list - unless of course I get sidetracked in the bookstore (as I usually am).

I'm predictable...Paragon got me by the throat whilst Fitz has my heart (funny how the two are linked). Hooray for Hobb! Meanwhile I adore Valentin - he makes me cry. And there is something just so charismatic about Brandin. Kisses to Kay.

Picking one - wow...very hard. I'd have to go with Fitz. A brilliant, supremely real character.

Going out on a limb here... Jon Shannow from David Gemmell. For flawed anti-heros he's the spankiest one around. Fabulous creation.

After that, Fitz... then the Fool... then Pug (early books)... then... many many more.

It was close. Polgara almost clinched for me, but finally I must choose Belgarath. He was just so entertaining for so long. A lovable rogue. I have a soft spot for Beldin too.

Oh yes! The fool!! He's probably my favourite!!! If I ever went to a dress-up party, I'd go as him.

But other than him, I like Gahltha from Obernewtyn Chronicals by Isobelle Carmody. That horse has spunk, and a sense of humour. <img src=">

I know this is cheating a little, but Fiona cheated a bit too...so I'm just a poor boy being led astray.

Favourite as in...

Wouldn't mind being:
Hell Tanner, the last Hell's Angel from Zelazny's 'Damnation Alley'. (It's considered SciFi, but it's pure fantasy.)

Wouldn't mind spending the night drinking with:
Tyrion from 'Ice and Fire'. (He'd fit right in with some dudes I already know.)

Wouldn't mind spending the night with...doing something other than drinking:
I'll have to get back to you on that one. Fantasy does seem to churn out it's fair share of fantasy creatures...if you know what I mean?

Adios :hat

I won't be changing mine...it takes me long enough to find it in the first place. No way I have the time to track the little bugger down and do it again.

Big Hills, you are a worry dude.

Thomas Covenant has to be the most unlovable character in the entire history of Fantasy.
He moans and bitches his way through 6 books; lying, hiding, running away...doesn't he rape somebody at one point? Every poor bastard that tries to help him gets themselves killed...and he just keeps on moaning and bitching.

Favourite character? No way, Jose!

*insert emoticon here that signifies that while this is my opinion and I'll fight to the death for it, I accept that BH too has the right to an opinion for which I will also fight to the death...his right to an opinion that is, not the opinion itself...which is patently wrong and sucks big time.*

I would have to say Corwin of Amber from Roger Zelazny's Amber series.

Corwin was ... well, a bit of an ass before the story starts. But with his recovering amnesia, he begins to see that and starts to change things for the better. He becomes more compassionate, but he's still a kick-ass and take names later sort of guy. It was a great mix for me.

Cheers,

Brad.

Pug, but i prefer Milamber
I am not really sure why he is my favourite character, buy he is the character that immediately comes to mind when i think of Fantasy
For many years i was a science fiction fan, i didn't think that fantasy was worth reading, i read Magician, and was not particularly thrilled, then i read bloody Thomas covenant, i was not impressed , in fact i forced myself to read them,so I reverted to Sci Fi mode, then i read 'Guardians of the Three' which was mentioned in a post about books with no human characters, cats that walk erect and fight with swords,
mediaeval stuff
then i was given The riftwar series so I re read Magician and I was gone, that was it, fantasy was part of my reading, and now I don't read that much Sci Fi, not through choice altogether, there are just so many fantasy Authors and so few Sci Fi, but who cares i just love reading

"They" those at ezboard wouldn't let me have milamber as a name, so hence milander
