Do you think it's too corny to have a bad character, but she has realtives thats worse than her, and they're always stuffing up her schemes because they hate her? Is it corny to mess with the readers emotions where, even though they hate her, human instinct is telling them to feel a tad sorry for her? Is it bad to open up a book with the evil character? So a reader starts to think that they're what the books about, when she's the one they're supposed to hate?? Hmmmm

Terroma. <sigh> Evil, so evil that she's giving me lots of trouble to write about her.

Satine, I don't think it would necessarily qualify as corny.

This is the age of the anti-hero after all.

No, to all of the above.

A writer once told me that no character should be entirely evil, or entirely good, for that matter.

Just remember that in their minds, any character will feel justified to do or say what they do or say. Ask yourself what are the reasons for your character to be the way he is, and if those reasons are good enough in that character's mind to justify the actions. It has to be better than "just because." Then, my bet is that you'll have a better time writing about this character. I know that my bad dude almost took over my book at one time. Had to give him a lollypop and send him to a corner for a little while. <img src=">

If you have trouble mapping characters, I would suggest one book that is very good and give lots of neat tricks: Creating Dynamic Characters by Nancy Kress. Mrs. Kress is a known sci-fi author and has a regular column in Writer's Digest Magazine, and I found that all that I read from her on the craft of writing is so true, and helps a lot.

Have fun, and don't give up on this character!

Yeah - what Manon said <img src="> . Sounds like a very interesting idea - (but at the risk of repeating Manon) even bad people shouldn't be 100% evil. It's that 2% of vulnerability that really captures people.

The perfect example of what Manon's saying has to be Tyrion in Martin's Ice and Fire...and how cool is that little dude?

He made the whole first book for me.

Hey Jess! That's one of the best investments you'll ever make in learning the craft of fiction writing. I'm happy for you. I was just considering re-reading this book myself. Let me know what you think of it! <img src=">
