It's not a question of whether or not they have been overused (which i don't think they have) but whether your use of them adds a new dimension or is just a copy of what has been done before.

As jacko says - just do it. Get going and write girl. I would if I didn't procrastinate so much.

DN said it all.

NO

Also does the whole people riding horses into battle mean it is overdone .. NO.

You can use any race any setting if the story is good.

Also I have a mate Russ Horseman who paints pictures of merfolk... and hey he can't keep up demand.

I would say on the contrary... there isn't a definitive version of the merfolk yet.

You could be just the person to write it.

So go girl.

Big Hills... you seem to put a lot of effort into procarastinating.

It's not easy you know. You have to keep concentrating on it all the time or you suddenly find yourself actually doing something.

Do you think the whole merpeople/underwaterpeople thing is overused and has been drilled to the point of nothing left worth using??

No. The last two times I saw it being used were by Kate Elliott and Kate Forsythe (why are nearly all female fantasy authors called Kate?). Kate Elliott's are a brilliant creation, authentically natural to that world and so wonderfully malevolent towards humans. Kate Forsythe's are very good too, also driven by hatred of human's. I thought both were highly original in the way they were used. Though, I haven't come across any others yet in my reading. As always it's a matter of how you handle them. Don't agonise, just do it!
