Kudos on working your butt off, Steve. I wish is about all I can say about myself at the moment.
Re Edit or Die... I died. Left a bit of a message back in another thread somewhere... However, the negative response I got on that book has inspired me to take up another project that got started and abandoned a while back. We'll see how this one goes... .............................. Chapter 32? The end is in sight. I am still in the midst of the black tunnel.
Sorry to hear about your project Lisa, better luck with the next one. At least you finished it - that's better than I've ever done Life is a containment field for thought. Lisa
You have achieved what most have failed to achieve... you have finished a manuscript...I would take heart and do what EoD say, make changes and resubmit... what do you think? And I'm sure you will get lots of readers here who will help... they all know something about Fantasy etc. You go my friend, and I will be right behind you... I'll show you mine, if you show me yours? hehehe Cheers Steve MemberTotal Posts: 223 Last Online: 19th Apr 2004 16:34:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
Thanks Slatz and Steve.
Re SD having 7 books before she got one worth publishing... Well, I'm there! Got those seven books that, according to EoD, are no good. Well, the first one anyway, and as the other six are follow ons... they must all be bad. (<--poking fun at myself here, guys, don't take it seriously) Re doing what EoD said... not likely. Well, not entirely. I'm taking some of what she said to heart and when I get back to that particular project (which I will some day), I will change some of the things she suggested, but I'm still convinced that the plot as a whole is still workable. Basically, she told me that none of it worked. I might still be horribly conceited in thinking that it works on a basic plot level, but I'm not about to abandon it completely... Steve, did you ever find that bit I posted at Voyager?? If you did, what did you think of that? .............................. #9 - 18th Aug 2002 20:31:00MemberTotal Posts: 120 Last Online: 19th Sep 2002 21:27:00 Registered: 15th May 2004 00:00:00 #10 - 19th Aug 2002 16:32:00MemberTotal Posts: 682 Last Online: 5th Apr 2004 22:40:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00 #11 - 19th Aug 2002 18:08:00MemberTotal Posts: 120 Last Online: 19th Sep 2002 21:27:00 Registered: 15th May 2004 00:00:00 #12 - 19th Aug 2002 20:18:00Forum ModeratorTotal Posts: 903 Last Online: 1st Jun 2004 21:40:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00 MemberTotal Posts: 223 Last Online: 19th Apr 2004 16:34:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00

The critical summary by a real professional - who is on your side even though it may not feel like it at the time - is so worth it because it prevents you making the presentation to the publisher when the story is not ready. The initial disappointment of realising it needs a lot more work is surely nothing in comparison to the letter of no thank you from a publisher....because that is so very final. They will not agree to see it again.
Hats off to Lisa for doing it and she is going to work that ms sometime because it already has the makings of a grand tale. MemberTotal Posts: 16 Last Online: 8th Nov 2002 16:23:00 Registered: 14th May 2004 00:00:00
Well, Lisa, I too think you still achieved a hell of a lot getting that MS off to Edit or Die. And your frankness in saying how it turned out shows more guts than I'll ever have. I was wondering how you felt about what they said - was it worth the money as a learning experience? I hope this isn't a rude question coming from a newcomer to this board.

Welcome Cerhis, it's great to have you aboard!
And don't worry about asking about anything, if my experience can help others, and myself of course, then they should be asked. So, was it worth it? My first, gut reaction... NO WAY! But after a couple of days, some looooooooong conversations with a close friend and a closer look at what the assessment said, yeah, it was worth it. It's really shown me what an editor/publisher would expect, what readers expect and how to deliver it. There are great sweeping passages that I just plumb don't agree with, but a lot that I, after a lot of thought and consideration, do agree with. I think, that in working through those areas, the story should improve and hopefully those other areas will shape up as well. I think, even if you send something off to an assessor and you get the worst assessment back, at least you've got a totally honest and professional opinion. You don't have to agree with everything they say, but at least listen to what they've said. Take their advice and use it however and wherever you want. Do you write, Cerhis? .............................. #20 - 22nd Aug 2002 14:38:00MemberTotal Posts: 77 Last Online: 19th Sep 2002 20:49:00 Registered: 15th May 2004 00:00:00
