I'm an iMac gal myself but I think the time is fast approaching when I have to stop the hysterical clinging to my lovely jubbly Appleworks and finally give in to Word for Mac probably. I drive the publisher nuts with my stuff sent electronically and when I lose something, it's gone for ever!

AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
So anyway, I was at point in writting where I knew where I wanted to go, just had to hurdle one itty bitty bump to get there. I had walked away from it, done other stuff, procrastinated like a professional and then finally sat down and stared at the screen until my eyes went buggy and things actually started rolling around in my head. So I started typing, thinking, wow, this isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and was cruising along at a nice pace, had about a page and a half of some serious dialogue down, sorting out things that had been half mentioned previously or only barely hinted at, and then...segue to about two weeks previous...I had the chance to reorganise my computer desk, get the printer and tower onto another table adjacent to the desk, so I conveniently positioned the power board, with its little surge protector switch thingy, right near where my feet would be under the desk, so that when the comp just froze, as it sometimes does, all I had to do was flick a toe at the switch and off we went again....back to the rant....I moved my foot a little too far one way, hit the power board, flipped the little switch and BAM! the comp shut down and I lost all that I had writen.
I haven't dared look at it since....

Big groan. I sympathise, I really do. A few days ago I tackled a really hard bit that, like you, I'd been scratching around and making cups of tea and just unable to weather it. Finally used a whole tube of bum glue and sat myself down. Wrote the sodding thing and felt such a huge sigh of relief because I had made it up and over the hill. Then I was disturbed, had to leave my desk. Returned and thought - ah yes, must back up to floppy. In went the disk and I saved the wrong version to back up and promptly trashed the right one and emptied trash because I was being so damn organised. I think my ears began to ring and my vision became tunnel when I discovered what I'd done. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Oops. It's fun, isn't it, when you realise what you've done.
I was madly tidying up my folders on the comp one day, getting rid of stuff that I never used or looked at anymore, and just deleted this folder labeled 'new folder'. Emptied the recycle bin and about two minutes after I did that, I realised that I had created that new folder and put all the separate story folders into it for easier handling!! I had the disk backups, but they didn't have all the little tweakings I had done on one story... and then one of the files was corrupted. Couldn't access it except in a very simple manner that didn't let me copy and paste to another program, had to sit there for about a week, retyping around 60 pages of stuff...
I really have to start printing out all this stuff.

lisa, you really should switch to microsoft word... perhaps not for this story you are writing, but if you begin another..... microsoft word can recover files if your computer freezes or restarts....
it doesnt save them all of the time... but it has saved my ass a few times... the computer will randomly restart(like it does some times...) and i just start back up and cross my fingers... and upon opening microsoft word, my document is right there saying that it had been recovered!
and as for the trash bin... dont empty it so often.... and make sure you know what you're throwing in there...

Yeah, I probably should... it's just that I know how Works... well works... don't have much experience with Word. I know I know, it's easy to learn... but still... I'll think about it. Asteroid B-612

i use lotus. its older but it saves stuff as often as i set it to while working (like every 5 minutes). i've tried some other programs but they weren't as good. i get grief for using ancient lotus but am used to it and it does everything i need.

Fiona you invited me to join this select band of brothers. I had at one time completed a whole novel. Alas, My computer crashed...erased my work... Haha I thought with a cunning plan... I will check my floppy... Bugger! The comp crashed and destroyed the blinking floppy at the same time. I am now rewriting the novel....... so i get to do a rewrite for the frist time and the material is fresh.... The weird thing is the story has changed considerably and the characters are not behaving the same way this time around either. So, maybe some entity wants me to rewrite? Steve

Ugh... a whole novel?? If that had happened to me, I would have gone insane I think. Just losing a page and a half ruins my day. Actually I did lose about a hundred pages on a sci-fi story a while back when I was upgrading to a new computer. "> Lost all the files in the switch over. I made an attempt to start rewritting it... but it's just not the same. I can't really remember everything that I had in there. Computers are nasty sometimes, aren't they. Good luck on the rewrite. Keep us updated on how it's going. "> btw Abadarse = LisaHy
