Hello Adelaide Any aspiring writers might like to come along to Torrensville Library this Thursday, Sep 6, when Sean Williams and I will be doing a very similar presentation to the one we did at the Adelaide Fringe Festival this year for writers. It's really about how to go about the business of writing i.e. getting serious that this is going to be an income stream, how to be professional, how to approach your work, your lifetsyle, etc. It's about getting published, working with editors/agents, the community and the industry of publishing as well as glimpse into the world beyond our shores into the international arena of sf and publishing. Check for details with Torrensville but I believe we kick off at 6pm for an hour with questions following. Don't miss a good opportunity to grill two of the country's leading sf writers and learn as much as you can from first hand experience. See you there. All welcome and it's free.

Hey Fiona, My mouth waters at the sound of presentations like this, but unfortunately, not going to be in Adelaide. What are the chances of video, or even audio taping your presentation for people unable to make it? I will of course understand if there are some contractual, intellectual property or rights management issues that prevent this from happening.

It's a very good idea, actually. I don't think we'd have anything contractual limiting this and I think everything we say is designed to help new writers so I don't feel at all protective of it. Let's see what can be done. I can't make any promises because to get set up by tomorrow won't be simple. I'd drag along one of my sons and our camcorder but one's got drama rehearsal and the other his debate final so they're out. Husband's not well. Hmmmm. Leave it with me. I'm sorry we can't do this sort of thing nationally with any ease, although Sean and I have spoken about it. Fx

Thanks Fiona, I really appreciate you even making the effort. Will be great if it pans out, even if you just pop your handycam up on a nearby shelf and hit record. Doesn't have to be a work of art! Murray

That is fantastic. I can't believe it. Let me know if you need a hand to shrink and distribute it. I am sure Trent or maybe even your boys will be able to handle it though. Thanks again!

I must say thanks and well done to Fiona and Sean for such inspiring talks, and to the Torrensville library for hosting the event. I found it useful and would recommend anyone popping along to future events. And thanks so much for the donation of the door prizes - the last time my name was pulled out of a hat like that, it was for jury duty. This was much more pleasant. :)

Well now the good news is that Sean and I really enjoyed the lively discussion - it was not at all like the Fringe Festival presentation, which was more us having a conversation about the industry and what it is to survive within in. But this gang had loads of very good questions so we were happy to tackle them. We needed a lot more time than an hour to be honest didn't we? The bad news is that it didn't get filmed in the end, I'm so sorry Murray and Ailsa. But we are doing it again and when we do I will have it properly organised and put on a disc. There is some talk that this goes national - apparently a lot of what we've got to say is very motivating and energising for new writers and especially aspiring writers. And although fantasy is a special area, the sort of guidance we give crosses all genre boundaries and really focuses on what it is to be a writer, how to interface with the industry, some helpful dos and donts to get a new writer moving forwards and so on. Again my apologies we couldn't get our act together to send off to those interested but I'll keep you posted on how much potential there is for us to come 'to a town near you'! or to get a copy of a similar presentation. Thanks to such high numbers for coming along on a Thursday night!

That's alright Fiona. Thanks for trying on such short notice. It would be great if you could get around nationally.

Hi Fiona, I'm so glad it went well! I had to pull out at the last moment, but I had no doubt it would be a success! One solution of making this knowledge available to interested people (especially those in regional areas) would be to use a MP3 player, and load onto a website Cheers, Kimberley

I'll always let you know at the Events forum what's coming up and if you're based in Adelaide, Jellybean, come along to the Fab Fantasy Book Club that meets each month at Dymocks. Normally first Monday of the month. Next one is 2nd Monday though because of the long weekend in October. Unfortunately, due to travel commitments, I will not be at the next two...possibly the next three as I am on tour at the beginning of December. F
