Good news. HarperCollins has decided to keep Valisar Australia and UK looking alike, so it is using the same art for its cover as the Royal Exile version shown in another thread. Beautiful artwork. It will look fantastic on Australian bookshelves.

Can't wait, it looks absolutely beautiful. Plus, I read the synopsis on Amazon and the story sounds quite different from your other series. I'm busting to get myself a copy as soon as it comes out. I'll be the first in line at Dymocks :)

Thanks, Clove. I dont know about being very different. As I was working on it I felt like I was re-entering the world of The Quickening. I think Percheron was the breakaway style, moving beyond that faux-European medieval atmosphere. With Valisar I plonk readers straight back into that simmering atmosphere of war, treacheries, struggles for a throne. But, dare I say I really like the story and I'm deeply intrigued as to where it will lead me....there are already so many story strands and I'm not sure where each is headed. One excites me - I sense it has the potential to colour the whole story arc and involves (in my opinion) a wonderful twist on a magic. But I shall have to see. Will begin on book 2 in about eight weeks and then I'll know more. Fx

Fi~

PLEASE tell me that the US folks will keep the same cover.  I'm tired of the UK always getting the better covers on fantasy books.

Let me find out - I haven't actually heard anything from New York on the cover yet but I believe the publisher will go with the UK and now Australian art.

I'd keep my fingers crossed but it makes it tough to type that way.

Absolutely it will look good on a shelf.  The white and the red will especially stand out on a bookstore shelf and really attract passersby, especially if the book is faced out or displayed on on endcap or table.

It reminds me quite a bit of the cover for Kushiel's Scion:

The white is so stark that the red splash (here it is the title, on Royal Exile it is Fiona's name) that it pops pretty good.

Too many books end up going for heavy tones or completely filling a cover with wraparound artwork that is so busy as to sometimes become muddled.  This plainer, more subtle approach, I think, is a winning choice for the new book.

Well, Steve, you'll be very pleased to hear that I learned this morning that HarperCollins New York has decided to use the British artwork for its cover. So now we have a worldwide look - hooray! Fx

I just hugged my computer.

Weird, I know.  But that was great news.

Kudos to the folks at HC US.
