Hello All Hope everyone's had a productive few days? I delivered my new crime novel to HarperCollins last week and I also wrote a short story featuring Breasts for breast cancer fund raising. Details in General Chat. I never write short stories so this really challenged me but as it turned out I liked the story as it unfolded and it became quite lush and evocative even though I didn't think I'd have sufficient space to set up a world. But I really learned some good lessons and would recommend that anyone who is struggling or feeling a bit overwhelmed by their novel or perhaps underwhelmed by the lack of inspiration for whatever reason, that they instead give a short story a go. It's a brief interlude that brings all of those writing skills into play but require you to arc the story over such a short space, do character studies rather than development, excellent descriptions of setting - rather than world building, and crisp dialogue. I thought I hated short story writing but I actually really enjoyed this experience even though I was under pressure to write it within 48 hours and get it away to the editor. Try it if you haven't already. It will sharpen those skills and clear the sluices in readiness for a bigger project.

An eye-catching topic and an excellent cause.

I've been a bit slow again this week. We got the pipes unblocked (both sets) then found out we had an inspection coming up. I'm neurotic about that so everything had to be pulled out and scrubbed. Then a couple of sad anniversaries rolled around and I didn't feel much like writing. I know, no making excuses. BUT all of that is over with now and the time away has helped me figure out what was niggling in the back of my mind. So today I've been working on fixing that up. Once I'm happy it'll be back to the editing. Now I've had a break, I'm even looking forward to it.

Hope everyone's had a good week.

I find that no matter how enjoyable writing might be - it can be hard work.   It's important to take a break every now and then.

Fiona, you are such a generous-hearted person, donating your time and energy like that for such a worthy cause.

My writing week has been erratic - I've met my weekly word count, but only because I crammed writing into two days instead of five.

Phew... Thanks Fiona I don't feel so bad now for taking a short break from writing my MS. I do however feel clearer about the story now for doing it.
