Hi Fiona,

Congratulations on your move to HarperCollins, hopefully this will lead to more people discovering your work.

I've already picked up that HP will publish your next book in hardback so by moving you out of the paperback original status but what I would like to know (if you know that is) will Orbit still retain the rights to your previous work and if they do are there any plans to re issue them in Hardback (preferably not omnibus editions) as my paperback copies need replacing.

Hopefully you may have some ideas on this and if they don't to nudge them in the right direction.

Ideal scenario = hardback reissues with original covers

Many thanks

Aaron

Hi Varn Thanks, the move to HCUK was strategic. It means now that Valisar can be released worldwide in an orchestrated publication between Sydney, London and New York. But more importantly for me, it meant just one editorial process and one point of contact, as well as one universal cover and so on. All of this makes a huge difference. But I love the Orbit crew and yes, it definitely retains the rights to the nine previous books it has already published, so we'll continue to work together. I haven't heard any plans to re-issue in hardback. That move was a strictly HarperCollins decision in London because it felt my sales warranted that sort of presence but I guess there is some possibility that Orbit might re-issue and make all the covers of the titles they own, have more resonance either with Valisar or even closer resemblance to each other. UK seems to be the trailblazer in where fantasy covers go. Your ideal scenario sounds nice but I doubt it will occur that way. Most likely paperbacks with new covers. F

Hi Fiona,

Thanks for the reply, I agree if they are ever published in hardback it will probably be with new covers, they will probably go with new covers on the pbs to boost sales of your back catalogue.

I spent 10 years as a Books Manager for WHS and thats the sort of thing that usually happened when an authors new book was published by a different publisher.

Orbit do have the Atom imprint which is aimed at the young adult market, they did hardback editions of Trudi Canavan's Black Magician's trilogy a couple of years ago.

Would you consider The Quickening an appropriate series for that imprint if they asked you?

My 14 year old son Alex has just started my (very worn) copy of Myrren's Gift , no feed back as yet though.

Regards

Aaron

Blimey! I would absolutely love it if they had an Atom version done for younger readers but Myrren's Gift is a tricky one. By the time you get to book 2, you're swimming through a lot of death and destruction. Mind you, most movies and games kids play these days are far worse than anything I write. I'll be very interested to hear how your young teenager gets on with Myrren! F
