Just watched the Spiderwick Chronicles last night.  What a feast.  It's a beautifully conceived and executed adaptation of the books written by Holly Black and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi.  The movie masquerades as a children's fantasy, but it's not appropriate for the little ones; too much violence.  I'd give it the nod to 12 and up.  The basic story is a twist on the familiar "we can't see the fairies etc. that are all about us" theme.  Well, you get to see them here as well as a number of other fantastical creatures.  Casting was spot on and everyone hit their marks!  I bought this one, the Field Guide Edition, for the extras. Highly recommended: 3 1/2 stars out of 4.
