When I tried to buy tickets for Avatar and it was sold out; I bought tickets for Sherlock Holmes, and was glad I did.  It's truly a visual feast and a non-stop adventure that satifies even as it reimagines the Holmesian myth.  Doyle purists won't like the way it rearranges events in the Holmes theology, but I enjoyed the fresh approach to the character.  Downey as Holmes and Law as Dr. Watson were both very effective and entertaining; Mark Strong made a convincing and threatening villian.

Avatar is getting all the kudos for it's visual effects, but Sherlock has it's own, which were equally effective in portaying the London of the time as well as a lot of truly outrageous fight scenes.  Highly recommended, I give this a solid 4 stars out of 5.

I'm going tonight and now you've made me look forward to it all the more. My son saw it last week and gave it two very firm thumbs in the air and keeps begging me to get down to the cinema. He's rushing back to pay and see it again but I haven't noticed him falling over himself to get back to Avatar, even though he reckoned it was amazing.

Did we think this was an overly complicated story? Did we even need Rachel in the story. It's not like she fulfilled a love story role but she did I suppose bring in Moriarty and I do like her as an actress. The film would have been no less entertaining if her character was not in it. All said though, I grow more and more impressed and fond of Robert Downey Jr as he ages. Used to dislike him as an actor in his early years but blimey he's grown on me. Love him in all of his recent roles. Can't wait for the next Iron Man but his Sherlock is terrific and Jude Law a lovely role as a foil. Quite liked his Watson who wasn't really stuffy, just a bit more responsible perhaps. Loved all the slow-motion stuff and the whole fresh take on the Holmes character. But you did need to concentrate to keep in touch with the complex storyline. Very happy to pay money to see this. F

Fiona, thanks for the review! I think I will have to wait for DVD, I only ever really liked Downey Jnr in "Only You" until recently. I can't wait for Iron Man 2 - it looks like it will be awesome.

It could've been that I was perhaps a bit tired, but I wasn't overly impressed with Sherlock Holmes.

It looked great, and I think Downey Jr. is a good (great? :P) actor. My gripe was that I found through their storytelling, that I didn't actually care about any of the characters, and I was only watching to find out the conclusion re: magic vs science. It just ended up washing over me in waves of indifference.

I also generally have enjoyed Guy Ritchie's past films, so I felt a bit, well, doubly let down.

I like enjoying movies, so I hope I'm in the minority here, and I'll proabbly see the sequel (which I assume they WILL make)
