Love the book, thankfully the remaining two books are due out this year, can hardly wait.
A couple of theories or observations on the book:
The quickening - Myrren could not use her gift to save herself, so I guess that as she was going to be burnt the quickening would not have worked for her. i.e. one person or even multiple people lighting a bon fire may not trigger the transfer. May need to be up close and personal so to speak for it to work.
Curse appears to be directed toward an end, i.e. allowing Myrren to gain revenge on the leader of the gawkers, i.e the prince/king. So the quickening is likely to stop when this is achieved, this does not necessarily mean he has to take over his body, but gain revenge for Myrren and himself.
As it appears his true love seems to like/love him in the two bodies he has had, so I suspect they could work something out if he can get himself back into a halfway decent male body.
Wyl has been able to beat the prince/king twice in duel's, interesting to see if he can keep finding good quality bodies to continue to do so. Thankfully he has a good paying job handing in his murdered body each time to get the reward to keep him in gold.
I like the twist of Wyl ending up is now in a woman's body. A man's brain in a womans body could be a horrible thing to watch.. Just hope book two is not just about him exploring his new sexuality.
The vision of the King and Queen kissing, could this be a vision of the ..lived happily ever after ending. ie. after Wyl is killed by the king and takes over his body and and they behead the king of the mountain folk?
All in all a great read unfortunetly for such an accomplished hero he seems to die an awful lot..

I was discussing this book with a friend of mine and we came up with a few speculations about the Quickening.
1. Wyl seems to be trapped into eternal life. However so far, the only people who he has possessed have been the ones that killed him. What would happen if he committed suicide?
Would the Quickening then work on the nearest person? If so it seems that the only solution would be for him to kill himself in a remote place with no people around.
2. If the Quickening does have a limited radius then idea no. 1 would seemingly be a good way for Wyl to quit the story. However, is the Quickening limited to people only? He could conceivably come back as a bug (especially if he was killed by a spider). This could mean a climb up through the food chain for our hero. It also seems that he retains some behaviour from the bodies he inhabits. This could prove interesting if he starts as a bug and ends up as a man but with all the animal behaviours in-between. You probably wouldn't want to invite him around for dinner.
Stay tuned for more fantastic ideas...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, look for him/her to turn into a hawk.
Fiona likes hawks.
Adios

You ALWAYS make me laugh, DN. i read your post and started clucking
which made me think: "hrmmm.... i dont think hawks usually cluck, but i could be wrong..."
i did rectify the reado...

I couldn't resist putting my two cents in on this...
I suspect that Wyl's "destiny" is to unite all three kingdoms - a rough ground work for Celimus's kingdom and Valentyna's (sp?) "queendom" to unite has already been laid. Wyl also has allies in the Mountain Kingdom if he can convince them that he's the same man and that he's trustworthy. How he'll go about doing this is up in the air for everyone (except for Fiona) but I think he'll use the assassin he's currantly occupying to settle the Mountains down and then as possibly the barbarian king he'll wage war on Celimus...not kingdom to kingdom, perhaps offering his guards (from when he was the General) and the general population excemption if they join him or at least don't fight him. In yet another one-on-one duel (Wyl must be really sick of letting Celimus walking away!) he "loses" and lets Celimus kill him...thus becoming King (keeping his promise to Celimus's father) and he's still got Valentyna, if he can convince her who he is really.
