Woohoo!
This is tremendously great news! And only 8 months... I am truly amazed. Until recently my major fantasy focus was the Wheel of Time. By the Host, that has gone downhill... and a 2 year wait for any action. ( to RJ)
But man, do I wish I wasn't isolated up here in Cairns. Is there anyone else from up here who's read Trinity?

The Wheel of Time isn't that bad, it's just getting to the point where we wish the Dark One would hurry up and break out of the Bore, the Dragon can then kill him and everyone can get on with their lives after Tarmon Gai'don and then Robert Jordan can say 'The end. Until the next third age'

I agree that the Wheel of Time is a good series, but the problem is that it is going so very slow... from what I've heard, Book 10 won't do anything to sat the fans, either.

OK, serious question.

It's pretty plain that Wot does nothing for me. It's slow, it's boring, it's waaay too obviously derivative of LotR and I've read it all before.

That's my opinion.

So, will some of you WoT fans tell me why you enjoy it?
What am I missing?

The simple answer to what you are missing is - nothing. If you don't like a book, for whatever reason, then you are not missing anything by not reading it. Just as I have nothing good to say about Traci Harding's books - and so am missing nothing by not reading them - there are people (even on this board - poor lost souls that they are) who will tell you that they are brilliant books.

As a person who thinks the first five books of WoT are excellent (and the next five are badly in need of a good bit of editing) I find in them everything I like about a fantasy. To me they are neither slow nor boring and the story is no more derivative of it's ultimate source than most other fantasies (including Tolkien). the world is believable and has a history separate from the characters portayed in the story. Even the characters in the story have a history outside the events of the books.

yes the first 100 or so pages are (intentionally) written in a style similar to LoTR. This was done deliberately to make readers comfortable with the story initially.

At the end of the day 99% of all fantasy has it's roots in the tales, myths and legends of our past - be they nordic, germanic, greek, indian or whatever - so if you look hard enough almost any book can be said to be derivative of an earlier book which also used those self same myths as inspiration.

Whether an author was the first to use an idea, source etc isn't important. It's how they use that idea that matters - how it is incorporated into their story and how they make it come to life (or not) for the reader - not whether they were the first to come up with it.

the fact that Jordan's books are so popular says that for huge numbers of people he has succeeeded in making his story real and different from anyone else using those same sources.

Thankfully though not everyone likes them. How boring would it be if we all liked the same books (then I would have to like Traci Harding - uggh).

Ok, I'll climb down from my soapbox now and you can all wake up and go find an interesting post to read.

Ultimately it's always about different strokes for different folks, whether we're talking about books, movies, music, whatever. I've read and enjoyed my share of books that weren't everyone's cup of tequila.

I'm not sure I agree with the more general comments, (I think there's derivative...and then there's derivative,) but to misquote a wise old Celtic philosopher, "I might not agree with what you read...but I'll fight to the death for your right to read it". (Just as long as, of course, I can reserve the right to let you know it's a load of rubbish.)
