Been there, done that.
My school library has two books by Dirk Strasser called Zenith and Equinox which I liked when I read them. When I went back for a re-read however they were missing. I figured, I can wait for a while. And I did. After eight months of waiting, I convinced the librarian to tell me who had Zenith. (There are advantages to actually talking to the librarians!). Just as I was getting up the courage to go and 'talk' to the book-napper when they strode past me and returned both books! I swooped on both even before they were returned, much to the amusement of the watching staff.

Firstly, I would never discourage anyone from going to a library. I've stated before that I'm one of those sad little people who need to keep a copy of any book they read...so, libraries aren't of any use to me.
But,
YOU HAVE TO READ, so if that's your only option...then so be it and I cast no nasturtiums. (Hell, I'd make a dental appointment just to read the 10 year old magazines if I had to.)
Secondly, let me make this perfectly clear...I don't spend a lot on books...can't, cause I don't have it to spend. I haunt second-hand shops, garage sales etc. (The only new books I ever get are just after my birthday and Christmas, cause everyone gives me book vouchers.)
Now this does mean that I take pot luck and I have little chance to stay as
current as I might like, but that's the price I pay for not paying full price...and I always have the joy of the unexpected; coming across an old Vance that I haven't read, or an Aldiss, or that 3rd book I've been searching for to complete a series.
Bye the way, here's a trick. A lot of garage sales include books, and usually at
very reasonable prices...20c to 50c, that kind of thing. Buy a whole pile of them, whatever they are, and take them to a second-hand shop and cash them in for credit. You can actually end up with way more than you started with. I've bought 50 books for $25.00 and then cashed them in for a $1.00 each.
I just wanted to make sure that nobody thought I was being a smart-arse about this.
I repeat, you have to read, and how
you have to do it...is how
you have to do it.

Well thats the thing if you like the book, go out and buy it then... then you wouldn't have to worry about returning it

MysteryChick, how people get rid of ANY books is beyond me.
"Though, having said that; I just love it when I go down to my local second-hand shop and find boxes of new books that someone has cashed in. (There's no room on the shelves down there any more, so they just sit in boxes on the floor...which is cool, cause it means I always know where to look first.)
