Occasionally my small, branch library in Orlando, FL ,will place a book face up in the stacks as opposed to upright, spine out, on the shelf. , Or, perhaps on that particular day, a lazy reader just dropped it onto an empty space on the shelf rather than properly replacing it. , However it happened, the cover caught my eye (kudos to Les Petersen), and I picked up Myrren's Gift, perused the back cover,  ,and took it home. , To the bottom of my then short stack of books to read I placed it...directly under John Ringo's Emerald Sea, his second entry in a fascinating new series. , A couple of days later I finished Emerald Sea and grabbed Dick Francis's Knockdown. , I'm rereading all that great writer's mysteries ,in order of publication. , They're short, and like a treat between meals, very satisfying. , Had I but known what waited for me, I would have jumped Fiona's book to the head of the pile.
 ,
Picked up ,Myrren's Gift, and devoured it in two evenings!! , As a previous poster mentioned, Robin Hobb's ",, A 'just one more chapter' sort of book.", was dead on. , , , I read voraciously, but, when reading for entertainment, I ,generally won't ,finish a book that doesn't pull me in, not a problem here! , Right from the first sentence of the Prologue ",, He knew the injury would be fatal.",,  ,I was sucked in. , I could easily identify with the protagonist, Wyl, and appreciate his struggles coming to terms with a destiny he would never have chosen on his own. , We have a classic ",good vs. evil", morality tale with swords, magic, and a third, dimly seem outside force threatening the major players.
 ,
Upon completing , Myrren's Gift, at 2:45 AM, I turned on my computer and logged on to my library's catalog to find a copy of the next book. , O woe is me, it's not to be had, they don't have it. , Next stop, Google, where I found, among other bits of information, this site. , Amazon, USA, has book 2 of The Quickening, Blood &, Memory, but book 3, Bridge of Souls, won't be released in this country until March of next year. , And there's no mention of any other McIntosh works. , I'll probably buy it from an Australian bookseller, as I can buy it and get it shipped via economy air for about $21.00 US...and have it before Christmas.
 ,
Thank you, Fiona McIntosh, for your gift to fantasy literature. , I'll be finding the rest of your published work in the near future and am looking forward, with great anticipation,  ,to reading it all!
 ,
Phil

Hi Phil Wow! Every writer should start their Monday mornings with one of these emails. Great fun to read sharing your build up to Myrren and then your experience with The Quickening. Thank you for picking it up and especially thank you for enjoying it so much. I'm glad you've been able to track down the other two even though it all seems rather inconvenient and tsk tsk that the library doesn't at least have Blood and Memory for you. Again thanks for the relentless hunt to satisfy your hunger for the rest of the tale. It's worth it! :P Now the good news is that my U.S. publisher, Harper Collins under its Eos imprint has bought the third series called Percheron. Book one is Odalisque. The bad news is I can't tell you precisely when that will be released although it is coming and will likely arrive on your shelves around this time next year. Time Warner UK through its Orbit imprint is not to patient and has bought all nine of my books. It has already released The Quickening (Bridge of Sousl this month I gather in London) and there's a rumour it might be jumping Percheron forward and releasing Odalisque in March 2006 but I haven't heard that from the horse's mouth yet. I do know that my first series, called Trinity, and comprising Betrayal, Revenge and Destiny, will be released during August, September and October 2006 throughout UK. Of course ALL of these books are instantly available in Australia....but then I'm teasing. I can see you are an avid reader with plenty of great books to read in the meantime. Keep enjoying The Quickening and let me know how you get on with it. Glad to have you at the Bulletin Board, Phil, and hope you'll drop by often. I'll be in New York next year doing some signings. All best, F

Well, Fiona and all, I've been able to pick up my own copy of Myrren's Gift and have Blood & Memory on order.  I've checked over 50 items out of my public library this year including Myrren's Gift, but there are some books that I just must own.

Since I can't wait for the third installment of The Quickening, Bridge of Souls, I've purchased an ARC of the work.  It'll be interesting to compare it to the released book in March.  Since I got into a roll on AbeBooks, looking for the Bridge of Souls ARC, I picked up ARCs of the first two books also.  I sometimes wonder why I run out of shelf space.

My best to you "down under" and to those ?up above?.  That just doesn't sound right.

Phil

ARC = Advance Reader Copy.  It's printed by the publisher and distributed free of charge to reviewers and booksellers in advance of the release of the first mass printing for retail sale.  There is usually a summary of the publisher's marketing plan on the cover.  It can also serve as a "galley proof".  In this country (the USA) it's used to drum up interest in the book and to give reviewers a chance to pass judgment on the book and get their views on it in print prior to the official release of the book.  Basically it's a sales tool.  ARCs of the first three Harry Potter books go for at least $250 US and as high as $900 US each.  Here's an example http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6552836125&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

Thanks Phil.  I used to work in the movie industry and was given "test discs" of each movie about 4 months before we (MGM) released them. Love the percs :)
